I JUST CAN’T STOP WRITING ON THIS BLOG!!! June 23, 2008

Man, this sux. Just found a site linking to a whole bunch of my domain-related posts… availabledomains.biz

Looks like a news aggregator where half the screen space is articles re-posted from legitimate blogs such as mine, and the other half is Google ads… Discovering schemes like this one is really de-motivating to people like myself to keep writing and offering original content to the world. I run one blog, where all or almost all of the posts are my own, but this joker aggregates domain news from across the internet, gets huge traffic because of the sheer amount of replicated content, and probably rakes in tons of adsense cash… I swear to god, it looks like there’s not one bit of original content on this entire website… Never once did the owner ask permission to reprint my articles… Where’s the love? Where’s justice???

Well… at least he seems to have a link back to the original sources. What more can you ask? I guess this is a site I’ll just have to write off as “clever web development” in my book, though the webmaster is risking serious legal trouble by reprinting content without permission, if his activities are discovered by someone who cares about this more than I do at this time…

Fuck it. I’m going to bed.

Should the government regulate the internet? (read: How much should the government regulate the internet?) June 22, 2008

Let *THIS* be my last blog post… something to think about.

Lots of people (49%) seem to think that the government has a duty to police the digital universe, according to Rasmussen Reports (a story I “dugg” today)… The article is filled with other insightful statistics about internet usage and regulation. I’ll leave the analysis up to you.

The U.S. government already *IS* regulating the net, to a large extent. Many of you probably remember a situation where a domainer had various domains disabled by order of the government because they were pointing to sites advertising travel to Cuba. The guy wasn’t a U.S. resident, nor was he marketing to U.S. consumers. He did make the mistake of registering his names with U.S.-based registrars though (it was Enom, to my best recollection…), and our relations with Cuba are still “so-so” , to say the least.

More regulation on the way? Perhaps the Snowe Bill push was a prelude to that. Historically, a country has rarely gotten any “freer” after it established a federal government, save for revolutions and other such cataclysmic events. Deregulation rarely follows the establishment of a central government. Is China a potential counterexample to that trend? Time will tell.

What all this means for domainers, who knows anymore… too many moving parts and variables to venture any long-term guesses… as the wise man says, hope for the best, plan for the worst.

Most recent domain name registrations. June 19, 2008

I keep proving to myself that there are great dot-com domains still waiting to be registered. Today, I scooped up CloseMonitoring.com, which would make a great brand for anything from a surveillance equipment business, to a health care services website. Another domain I picked up this week is Ormosil.com Ormosil is a nanomaterial with several applications in industry. Yet another one-word domain registered by me this week is Repoxygen.com, a type of gene therapy that is currently being tested, with potential to become a cure for anemia. Opportunities in this business are endless, if you only choose to open your eyes, and maybe read a little.

The evolution of domain parking May 19, 2008

More and more advanced domain parking and development platforms have been coming out in the last few months. The bulk of my domain portfolio is currently hosted on Fabulous.com, which is a more conventional service. The landing pages at Fabulous do not really stand out from the crowd, but I love their analytics and in-depth statistical data. I would say that this service is great for managing, analyzing, and fine-tuning large portfolios of names. Parking pages do not seem to differ all that much across these big-name brands, like Fabulous, Parked, NameDrive, ParkingPanel, DomainSponsor, ActiveAudience, etc.

I have been trying out a more forward-looking “parking” service that really develops your domains and adds quality content continuously and automatically, allowing your sites to grow and develop in a very organic manner. It is called Evolanding. So far, I have been very satisfied with the content provided (news articles being aggregated, videos, pictures, job postings), the ads-to-content ratio, steadily increasing search engine traffic, but it looks like they still have a few kinks to work out in their “Dashboard” control panel account view… some of the revenue and traffic stats are a little questionable, and I still can’t figure out how exactly the advertising revenue is split between EVO and their clients. Check out my site VentureDollar.com for an example of how the EVO platform works. You ARE actually allowed to add your own custom content, which I think is pretty cool. The team behind EVO is constantly releasing new features, upgrades, and other add-ons to their service, there’s a blog link that can be reached from their home page.

The story continues…

Today I came across a cute little website called CandyLinks.com I liked how the site was developed, and wanted to find out whether it was a manual or an automated operation. Turns out, it’s a little bit of both. After doing a little digging, I found that the site was generated with a friendly little php app called SteadyNiche. I guess you have to purchase and then install the script for every domain that you own, and though there are up-front costs, you do not have to switch your name servers to any parking service, and ultimately, you maintain full control of what shows up on your web pages. Though it takes a bit more work, you do reap the benefit of keeping all of the revenue that your ads earn (doesn’t look like there are any revenue sharing schemes involved here…), and you can basically call the sites you produce using this tool, true, bona-fide web development and keep your conscience clear. What’s parking? What’s development? The lines may soon begin to blur…

Disclosures (sort of): Though I use the services mentioned in this post, I am not affiliated with the owners of the parent companies, and I tried to keep this review-like post as objective as possible. Act on my feedback and ideas at your own risk, my experience may be unrepresentative and different from that of others who use these services. If something goes wrong, DON’T BLAME ME! I would, however, appreciate your own feedback and recommendations for other parking and domain development platforms. I think that diversification is generally a good thing. That includes having a diverse domain portfolio, as well as different ways of managing it… then again, to each his own. What works for one may doom another.

Happy domaining!

More on the value of generic domain names. April 9, 2008

By now, my readers must have realized that my real addiction is domain names, not alcohol. One of my favorite activities is scouring the web for examples of how different people utilize their domain names, different development and monetization strategies and such… Fresh development ideas drive this business and create opportunities for old domain magnates and new industry entrants alike, and in general, I can never get enough. My most recent discovery is ElectronicMusic.com

Overall, it is a fairly simple website. I’d say that close to 70% of the total content area is dedicated to banners, google ads, and sponsored links. The only source of content is an infrequently updated news posting system, sort of like a blog, though more archaic (anyone remember NewsPro of the olden days?). It is not even a feed or an aggregator. However, this website is still very highly ranked in Alexa, and probably brings in a revenue stream that pays for its yearly renewal fees many times over.

This is a prime example of the value of a well-chosen, generic name. Clearly, such a generic, category-defining, commercial domain deserves much more development than it has gotten so far, but the very fact that it is still ranked within the top 1 million or so sites on Alexa is testament to the huge potential of ths property.

There is huge untapped value in names such as this one, and huge props to the registrant for scooping it up way back in 1996, and good luck with continued development.

Why generic domain names are even more (WAY MORE) valuable than gold and oil. April 1, 2008

1) Domains are land. Because the name of the thing conjures up the thing itself (think about your browser’s address bar and its function), domain names ARE the landscape that they represent. The internet is truly an elegant system. As many early adopters have realized more than a decade ago, domain names are the “lots” on which “skyscrapers” (websites) can be built. This is a concept I first discovered at eRealEstate.com, I believe (one of Rick Schwartz’ hideouts…). The shorter, more generic, the more universally recognized AND understood AND commercial a name is, the higher the value of this virtual property. These parameters play the same role as location value does for land. Even better, the relative valuations of these parameters are likely to change MORE SLOWLY than the relative values of PHYSICAL LAND. For example, think about how long it would take for a name such as “Property.com” to lose its meaning and value vs. how long it took for Detroit to go from being known as “The Paris of America” to other, less dignified monikers. Think about the many run-down neighborhoods in big cities that used to be prime, ritzy, high-value, and sharp. Even if a bad website tarnishes a certain domain name’s reputation for a period of time, if the name is generic, it can be resuscitated and redeveloped much more quickly and easily… at least it would take a great deal more effort to bring some Detroit neighborhoods back to their former glory. Think about it.

2) Domains are the PIPES through which two of the most valuable commodities today flow: TRAFFIC (eyeballs) and INFORMATION. You can use domains to attract, direct, and manage traffic. Traffic and information are currently inextricably linked to the Domain Name System, and both can be very valuable when used wisely.

3) Domains are priceless possessions that can be given as gifts and retain sentimental value. This idea evolved as a result of a recent discovery I made… Both “CyranoDeBergerac.com” (17th century Frenchman and the Rostand play based on the former) and “LoveLetters.com” point to the same MySpace page. Keep in mind, these are two VERY generic and potentially highly commercial names. Another twist, the names do not seem to be registered to the owner of the MySpace page. The registrant, according to DomainTools, is one “Dave Lizmi” , a former rock guitarist turned internet entrepreneur, who appears to have at least another 700+ domains to his name. I have no idea who this is, nor do I presume to have any clue to the nature of the relationship between the domain registrant and the owner/author of the MySpace page, but this discovery got me thinking about the following…

People name stars after their loved ones… stars they will never touch or see up close… for all practical purposes, these things are as “virtual” to us as dreams and fairy tales are. Now, why not dedicate a unique domain name to your significant other instead? Could that not be just as meaningful, if not more meaningful to whoever receives such a gift? Should not the fact that you can actually make something of this domain increase its value? Cool stuff, eh?

I still maintain that everyone with a blog or a MySpace page should have a domain name linked to it. Everyone should have their own domain name on their business card, right above their email address. I believe that this may become the case soon enough in the future. This is just ONE of the many potential sources of demand for the priceless assets that our community keeps.

Thoughts? Reactions? Refutations? All I seek to do is promote a healthy and meaningful discussion. This is all.
